On 25-26 April 2024, the Cross Chamber of the Patriarch’s Palace hosted the conference “Private Collecting as a Form of Preserving National Historical Objects”, timed to the current exhibition of the museum “Amateur Scholars of the Russian History. Pavel Karabanov and Moscow Collectors of the 19th Century”.

The representatives of museums, libraries and archives discussed the history of private collections in Russia in the 18th-19th centuries, private collecting in the context of the cultural life of the country, preservation of historical heritage through private collections, fate of private collections in state museums and their role in scientific life.

Deputy Director for the Scientific Work of the Moscow Kremlin Museums Andrey Batalov addressed the guests with a welcoming speech.

“This is the first conference in our museum that is dedicated to private collecting. If we remember the history of almost every museum, except ours and the Hermitage, in majority their historical core comes from the private collections. The art history  - pictorial or decorative – is guilty of one paradox: private interest and private enthusiasm determine the level of social awareness of the art history,” he noted.

Members of the staff of the Moscow Kremlin Museums, Hermitage, State Historical Museum, Tretyakov Gallery, State Museum of Oriental Art, Russian Ethnographical Museum, Russian State War-Historical Archive, Russian National Library, etc. spoke at the conference.

State Research Institute for Restoration, Central Andrey Rublev Museum of Ancient Russian Culture and Art, representatives of the Church-scientific Centre “The Orthodox Encyclopedia”, and Sretensky Ecclesiastical Academy

The conference finished with a guided tour round the exhibition “Amateur Scholars of the Russian History. Pavel Karabanov and Moscow Collectors of the 19th Century”
