Church of the Deposition of the Virgin's Robe
The Church of the Deposition of the Virgin’s Robe, situated between the Assumption Cathedral and the Faceted Chamber, occupies a special place in the architectural ensemble of the Cathedral Square. The extant church was founded by Metropolitan Gerontius in 1484 and it is dedicated to the Feast of the Deposition of the Virgin’s Robe. For several centuries the church was a part of the Metropolitan household and a private chapel of Metropolitans of Moscow and all Russia and Russian Patriarchs.
The iconostasis and the murals of this small and cosy church form a unique artistic ensemble. In the gallery of the church there is a permanent exhibition of Russian wooden sculpture and carvings of the 15th-19th centuries. There are not many pieces of this type of art left, so every item in this collection is of great interest and value.
